"Dear Betty,
I wanted to take this time to send a note of thanks for the job you and your volunteers did to make this weekend's dedication of the WWII Memorial an event my family will cherish. Please keep my name on file in the event that you need an out of town volunteer for future events.
"

Investing in Your Image: Presenting your company to the public, enhancing your own career development, or providing an opportunity for your children to succeed, requires the carefully planned and executed application of numerous resources. Events by Ann Carrie Simon has the knowledge, skills, and experience to handle every aspect of your marketing campaign or event, and additionally, offers workshops to increase personal and business skills.

Betty A. Hemby, Founder: has over 22 years of experience in the planning and execution of complex events that has been gained from working in a variety of settings that include the government, public and private organizations, volunteerism, community service, and ongoing continuing education that includes courses through the Event Management Certificate Program at George Washington University’s School of Business and Public Management.

Ms. Hemby served as the Assistant Director for Guest Management for the National World War II Memorial Dedication, a national event with an operational budget of $18 million reporting to the Director. In this capacity she assisted in the planning, coordination, and implementation of activities. Included were guest management and services, signage, catering, invitations, accessibility, dignitary protocol and support, transportation, amenities, volunteer recruitment, training, and scheduling.

Some of the accomplishments and highlights of that national event included:

  • Developing the preliminary transportation plan to transport over 100,000 guests (public and private) and supervision of the vendors and their subcontractors.

  • Initiating and lobbying for a jurisdiction waiver agreement for accessible transportation by the DC Taxicab Commission and suburban taxicab companies, resulting in the adoption of the waiver.

  • Directed management of over 1,200 volunteers, including recruitment, training, and scheduling. Produced training content and brochures for volunteers and staff, and supervised training of all volunteers.

Prior to this she was the Event Planner for The American Institute of Architects. In this capacity she coordinated high-level client meetings with cabinet administration officials, Members of Congress, and worked with Secret Service on logistics and security that pertained to these meetings.  She worked closely with staff and outside clients to plan, budget, and execute events that occurred in the AIA meeting space

She is motivated to participate in cause related events and enjoys the involvement knowing that it will benefit the community. This was one of the reasons why she lobbied for seven years and was awarded the state franchise for the Miss America Scholarship Program in the District of Columbia in 1997 (program was dormant for 7 years due to mismanagement by prior organizers). She managed the DC Miss America Program including all related events and media coverage. This included recruitment, community awareness and education, producing the stage show, coordinating scholarship fundraising events and leading a volunteer committee.  The local titleholder was scheduled for community service and business appearances.  In addition to the local involvement she also served on the Board of Trustees for the National Association of Miss America State Pageants (NAMASP).  At that time the Miss America Organization represented the largest scholarship program for women.

From 1994-1995 she served on a volunteer basis as the Public Relations and Media Consultant for the Washington Chiefs (national minor league football team) arranging media appearances for the owner and having the team involved in the community.

Teenage pregnancy and a lack of career goals by at-risk youths led her to initiate a grassroots intervention program targeting teen pregnancy and responsibility at Eastern High School from 1993-1995 called “Pageantry to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.” This program taught the teens event and meeting planning skills while they assisted her in the coordination of the local Miss America preliminary.

Being an avid sports enthusiast she has been an event planner, participant or committee coordinator with sports related functions in the area that range from golf tournaments, coordinating in-kind sponsorships, marathons/walkathons, NFL cheerleader auditions, fundraisers with athletes for local area non-profits, and obtaining items for sports silent auctions.   On a volunteer basis for four years she served as the Director of Promotions for the Washington Diplomats Soccer Club.

Working on task-oriented projects that require good organizational skills she has the ability to juggle many projects from presidential inaugurations to friendly visiting with senior citizens and veterans.  Having the ability to communicate and relate to all levels within and outside an organization is a quality that she enjoys. This enables her to create and build positive productive relationships. Betty’s philosophy is to under promise and over deliver combined with a focus on outstanding client and customer service.

She is the creator of America's Purrfect Feline® an idea and concept that is now a registered trademark. This marketing event is an innovative educational project for the community and a commitment to the welfare of youth and animals in the entire nation.

Ms. Hemby attended Montgomery College-Rockville majoring in Marketing and the University of Maryland. Her membership affiliation includes the Montgomery College Alumni Association, Chevy Chase Citizens Association and is a CERT Instructor (Community Emergency Response Team) with Serve DC.
